TWO FDNY FIRE TRUCKS COLLIDE
While responding to a fire call. Squad 18 and Ladder 12 crashed in the intersection of Seventh Ave. and West 10th St. in Greenwich Village.
The violent collision left all 12 firefighters on the two trucks injured, five with serious head and neck injuries with one in critical condition. The other seven were less serious but required hospital treatment. The most critically injured was Lt. Adrienne Walsh on Squad 18. She is noted as the first female to have ever been assigned to a rescue squad company in 2004.
Early reports stated that they were responding on two separate alarms, but a later update says that they were on the same call for a gas leak.
The light pole that the Squad ran into is credited with preventing the truck from crashing into an occupied shop just beyond. FQ

Firefighters battle a blaze - at their own firehouse in Harlem.
A blaze broke out inside a Manhattanville firehouse Friday, injuring eight firefighters, including a chief.
The two-alarm fire, which began around 8 p.m., sparked on a landing between the second and third floors of Engine 80 and Ladder 23 on W. 139th St., an FDNY spokesman said.
The fire was extinguished by 25 units, including some firefighters from Engine 80, the spokesman said.
The blaze was being investigated last night, but an FDNY spokesman said it did not appear to be suspicious.
Three firefighters were being treated for minor injuries at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia and two others were rushed to St. Luke's Hospital, the spokesman said. FQ

A YEAR OF 9/11 MESSAGES
On September 12, 2001, we launched a feature on this site
where visitors could post a message for New York’s Bravest.
In the year that followed we recieved more than 2000 messages
(many of which were printed in a special issue of Firefighters
Quarterly Magazine). We still have them here on the site, as a memorial and a reminder.
